Richard Berry………
………has spent most of his working life in
Theatre in Education and Small Scale Theatre.
He was a founder member of ‘Action PIE’, Cardiff’s first Theatre in Education company
and also co founded Hijinx Theatre
He now works mainly as a Traditional Storyteller and Writer
working in schools, hospitals, old peoples homes, libraries, theatres, parks, museums, at historic monuments and at festivals……
in fact almost anywhere he can.
He wrote and directed ‘ Gold ‘ a play written for Community Music Wales
as well as creating a new play ‘ Tempus Fugit’ for the BBC Wales Cultural Diversity Unit
He also performs with Helen Woods in their show forNursery school children
which was especially created for Cardiff Arts in Education Agency
They will create another under fives show for St Davids Hall Promenade season this year
after their first ’Tiddly Prom – Bert’s Magic Musical Allotment’ (2004) followed by ‘Meg and Mog ‘ (2005)
‘Berts Magical Kitchen’ ( 2006) Berts Magical Farmyard ( 2007 )
He is an Associate of Hijinx Theatre
and has worked on their integrated community project‘ Odyssey Theatre‘
He wrote and directed ‘The Squeeking Beauty’ which was performed in the Studio of the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff (2005 ) also‘The Ozard of Wiz ( 2006) ‘The Fall of the House of Wax’ ( 2007)
As an Artistic Director of ‘Theatr Ffynnon’ (a company for adults with learning disabilities in Monmouth) he wrote and directed four annual productions ( 2000 –2004 )
He has written two award winning plays for special needs teenagers published by the University of Wales Press ( 2002 ) :
‘Branwen’ and ‘ The Tower by the Sea’
and has taught Storytelling at the University of Glamorgan
and performed traditional Welsh stories at the‘Wales Croatia Nights ‘ Festival ,Zagreb in 2001 / Theatre on Podol , Kiev 1994, LUAGA & LOSNA – Theatre Festival, Austria 2004 / 2008
In the summer of 2003 he created an education programme with Adzido the UK’s leading Pan African Dance company.
He has also developed an Intergenerational Storytelling project ‘Speaking and Listening ‘ for St Donats Arts Centre ,Arts Active @St Davids Hall , Cardiff, Pontardawe Arts Centre,Monmouthshire Housing Association, Linc-Cymru Housing Association and RCT Homes.
This has grown out of his storytelling outreach work with elderly people for ‘Beyond the Border International Storytelling Festival’ (1998 – 2007)
He is actively involved in the current storytelling revival, not only as a performer but also in running training sessions, and coordinating the Cardiff Storytelling Circle

My current Fee’s and contractual conditions are :

Full day £350

£500 – £1000 depending on requirements
Storytelling / Drama / Creative writing sessions
Full Day: £250
Half day: £150
A full day consists of a morning and afternoon, or an afternoon and evening. A half day consists of a morning, afternoon or evening, comprising up to two hours with a suitable break.
Rates for work overseas should be discussed
Festivals and other short projects lasting approx 1 or 2 hours – Current rate £150.00 + possible resources (£30) + travel expenses
Long term projects involving several weeks of work – open to negotiation
Mileage rate is 40p per mile. Whenever possible travelling expenses should be covered by the organisation booking the visit. If a booking requires an overnight stay, then this should also be considered, along with a subsistence allowance. However, the way in which the venue/organiser and myself agree fees, number of sessions, and expenses should always have some room for flexibility. This ensures that a fair arrangement can be made and the best possible use of everyone’s resources achieved.
Where events and projects require a period of research, preparation and attendance at meetings there may be additional costs.
Cancellations
If I am unable to fulfil an agreed session I will inform the contracted organisation as soon as possible. Every effort will be made to provide a possible alternative provider ( or make a recommendations of available alternative providers).
If the event is cancelled by the booking organisation it is essential for them to contact me as soon as is feasibly possible.
Cancellation of a Contract shall be as follows;
a) More than 30 days from the performance date; No fee payable.
b) Between 22-30 days from the performance date; 25% of the full fee.
c) Between 15-21 days from the performance date; 50% of the full fee.
d) Between 8-14 days from the performance date; 75% of the full fee.
e) Between 1-7 days from the performance date; The full fee will be payable.
